What makes a great Business Card Design

A great business card design should:

When starting your business card design, you should
remember that business cards are 2" x 3.5". That
is quite small and cannot include all information
about your business. So ask yourself, what is the
critical information I need to make a great business
card ?

You know your business better than anyone and each
business offers key reasons for customers to do business
with them. It could be location, or unique products,
or exceptional service. What ever it is, make sure
you highlight it on your business card. That way you
will communcate in the limited space on the business
card the primary reason for customers to do business
with you.

If location is important to making customers do business
with you, you might consider a photo of your location
being on your card. If you have a key product which
makes customers do business, then a photo of that product
can immediatly make them recognize it. Maybe a picture
of you on your card will communicate that key characteristic
you offer for them to do business. Do not underestimate
the power of using a photo on your card for communicating
that vital reason for customers to do business in the
small space of 2" x 3.5".

There are some things that a photo will not be appropriate
for communicating the key reason for doing business. In
this case a slogan, a map, an industry recognized logo,
or statement of guarantee might be needed. Lettering
needs to be done with concise words to fit in the
limited space and they should be highlighted with
boldness or italics. Be careful to limit your use
to no more than 2 font types for good legibility.

Now with the key reason for customers to do business
on your card, it should drive interest to ask for more
information. So, make it easy for your customers to
communicate by giving your phone, email, web site, or
other method to contact you so they can learn more
about what your business offers.

I have seen many cards where the person's name and title
are quite large, but the phone number, web site,
and email are so small you can just barely read them.
This leaves customers feeling you are either difficult
to contact or you do not really want to communicate.
Make sure your main communication method is easy for
potential customers to identify.

After you have selected the vital information you want
on the card the last step is to do a layout. Make sure
your card is not over crowded with information, but is
concise and easy to read. Do a few mockups and ask
friends and family how they feel it looks? If you do
not get a "that looks great" reaction then make changes.
You do not want your card too look too bland or too busy.
It needs the right mix for your business image, yet it
needs to be easy to have some way to identify it in a
crowd. Using a colored background for your card, or using
a photo background for your card is one of the easy ways
to make your card standout.

After you have gone through these steps you should
have a card you are proud to hand out. Your customer
will feel the pride you have in your business by the
way you hand out your card. Hand it out with the
pride in the effort you have put into making your
card an effective marketing tool for your business.
