| Technical information on Card LayoutsPaper Media optionsLayout constraints caused by our cutting operation: We require all critical image items to be a minimum of 0.125" from a card edge. Image on card front to extend to card edge (full bleed): If you want an image to fill the front of the card, the layout must extend the image 0.125" beyond the edge of the card. Cards are cut at: 2"x3.5", so the front image must extend beyond these dimensions a minimum of: 2.125"x3.625" The following black line box on the image below shows where the cut line is for a layout we did to give a full bleed of a front photo image on a business card design:
Here is another example: Card image does not fill business card shape and cannot be extended for full bleed beyond cut line without extending parts of card which cannot be cut: (white line shows cut line)
Designer went back and changed design so that the background could extend beyond the cut line: (black line shows cut line)
Another example of a card where the designer wanted full bleed. Here is the design submitted:
Here are the changes needed to extend the full bleed parts of the design:
Image Resolution We recommend the final business card image resolution to be a minimum of 300 dpi for excellent printing output. ( Greater than 360 dpi overkill ). Lower than 300 dpi resolutions will work okay for some images. I have seen 150 dpi work well for the different multiple images on a card, but I would not recommend going lower. Of key concern for the card image resolution is the sharpness of the overlayed text. One can take a lower resolution photo, overlay text on top and then same the overall card image at a higher resolution an make a beautiful card.
