Resolution: Making slides from digital images is like printing, so as
a general rule the digital image which can make a nice
print should be able to make a nice slide. When I make a slides from say a
scan
of a 4x6 print, I scan the print at 300 dpi. This produces an 1800x1200
pixel image. This is very good resolution for the 35mm slide.
Probably the minimum resolution I would recommend trying to make slides
out of would be a digital camera with only 480x640 resolution. Most digital
cameras are much better than that these days.
Our film recorder actually shoots the slides at at: 4096 x 2731 which is
quite close to the capability of film grain.
Filling the 35mm frame: Most digital camera files produce a more square image than the 3x2
(1800x1200) ratio needed to fill a 35mm frame. Therefore, image shape needs to
be
considered if filling the slide frame is important. Cropping is required in
order for
a more square image to fill the 35mm rectangle frame.
The following link gives a detailed discussion of this issue using a
powerpoint presentation page size. The concept is the same for digital
camera images because most digital camera images are also sized differently than
35mm film.
Detailed discussion and example image of sizing your Powerpoint presentation for 35mm slides.
Most of our customers do not want any cropping of their image. We do not crop the image unless requested to do so. Therefore, to fill the 35mm frame, we do a best fit of the image into the frame and then we fill in around the image with black to complete the 35mm frame. ( Options available by special requests are: we can fill in with white instead of black, and we can do a small shrink inside of the 35mm frame which produces a small black frame around the image. )
Leave space on the image edges: Use generous margins, because
some of the film image edge will go under the 35mm mount frame.
Also, there are various irregularities in processing and projection
systems, where as much as 15% of the edges of a 35mm image could be obscured
upon presentation. No important information should be placed near
the edge of the frame. (35mm slides do not provide any margin around the
edges, but we can offer to process your slides with an 8% shrink which will
insure all image edges to fall inside of the mount frame. To have your
slides processed this way, please make request when submitting order into our
shopping cart. )
File Formats: I recommend JPG file format with minimal compression for sending images for slides. ( We can accept most image file formats. )
For sending files our ordering page has links for uploading with a Web
browser and placing your order into our shopping cart. You can also
send
files as email attachments. Here is the link to our ordering page:

Here are some other recommendations:
Make one ZIP file of all or several of your slides, and then upload the one
ZIP file with FTP. Making a ZIP file compresses the files for easy
transmission without any loss of of image quality. Since JPG files are
already compresses ZIP usually cannot further compress the image, but it can
combine the images into one file to be unzipped
here.
If you have many files to send, we recommend that you combine your files
into a ZIP file (or series of ZIP files). There are many FREE tools
available to put your files in a ZIP. Click to see
list of Free ZIP tools.
FTP is really the best method for sending files over the internet.
An FTP program that I we use and recommend is: AceFTP The following link takes you to a site where you can
download this program:
http://freeware.aceftp.com/
Another good FTP program we have used and recommend is: FileZilla
The following link takes you to a site where you can download this
program:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/filezilla
These can be downloaded and used for FREE for personal use.
We have an anonymous FTP site at:
ftp://ftp.galleriaventures.com
with the remote incoming
directory called: /incoming
( If you send your files by FTP please also send us an email
to let us know about your upload. )
